TEDx Manhattan: Changing the Way We Eat

Yesterday Sprout had the pleasure of sponsoring the local viewing party for TEDx Manhattan: Changing the Way We Eat.  TEDx is part of the TED Talks series, which aims to educate in an innovative and inspirational way.  The TEDx: Manhattan event, held annually, focuses specifically about sustainability within the food industry.

The highlights of each talk were captured visually by a live-drawing artist.

This year there were 173 viewing parties in 34 states and 12 countries. The DC viewing party was hosted by The Tergis Group, and it took place right here in Arlington, Virginia.

More than 100 people attended the Arlington viewing party.  There were representatives from local media, as well as people who work in the food & farming industries, and folks just interested in food!

We were very pleased to have the opportunity to co-sponsor this event, alongside other leading healthy-food proponents such as FruitCycle, SweetGreen, and MOM’s Organic Market.  It is so rewarding and exciting for us to be part of the healthy-food movement!

Sprout was a proud sponsor, alongside other healthy-food leaders.

Sprout provided yummy fresh-from-the-garden snacks, including strawberry cilantro salsa and caramelized onion dip (both recipes available here on our blog.)

Sprout provided simple, healthy appetizers made from freshly-grown produce.  The majority of the ingredients in these snacks can be grown right in your own backyard!

The salsa and dip were huge hits, and even won the kid-stamp-of-approval (which is sometimes challenging with veggie-based foods!).

The talks were innovative and inspiring, and provided great perspective about how our food & farming industries are changing.  Speakers addressed a wide range of topics and questions, including:

  • Why does organic food cost more?
  • How will the food system look after the apocalypse?
  • What will it take to end hunger in the United States?
  • How important are women farmers?
  • How can hip-hop be used to teach children about holistic health?
If you’re interested in seeing the full talks, you can find them here.   As you watch, perhaps it will inspire you to take a moment to reflect on how you eat, and where your food comes from.

We look forward to next year’s TEDx Manhattan: Changing the Way We Eat.  Until then…

Happy farming!
